Based on ITU / IEEE / ANSI / TIA standards, Passive Optical Networking (PON) is a high-performance, high-density, gigabit based optical LAN solution delivering high speed data, voice and video to the desk, room or building. PON design is based around a point to multipoint architecture of fibre to the desktop utilising an Optical Line Terminal chassis (OLT) and Passive Optical Splitters (unpowered). The design is extremely flexible as the 100m rule of the copper channel does not apply. With distances of more than 20km achievable, the requirement for multiple rack locations is eliminated, thus saving money on space, power and access layer switches. Benefits
